A HID Ballast is a device required by a xenon headlight (bus also for fluorescent lamps) to regulate voltage and current supplied to the lamp during start. Also does it provides enough voltage and current throughout operation. Without a ballast, the lamp would draw too much power, causing it to burn out quickly - sometimes even within a few minutes. The ballast prevents this from happening and ensures you get the benefits of the lamp's full lifetime.
Quality ballast acts as DC to AC converter so that you can use the normal DC power source in the car to light the bulbs efficiently. The most common cause of HID Ballas failure is long term use, which can resulting in a headlight flicker or cannot turn on at all. When it fail, you'd better replace it so that you can enjoy the real strengths of HID bulbs.
